Warning: Be sure to read the chapter "Safety precautions when working with an airbag".
Withdrawal
Disconnect ground wire (-) battery. The battery is located in the luggage compartment behind the right side trim.
Attention: This erases the contents of memory devices, such as the engine trouble code memory. Follow the instructions given in the chapter "Removing and installing the battery".
Isolate the negative battery terminal to avoid accidental electrical contact.
Remove the 3 screws securing the lower trim of the steering column.
Press the upper trim of the steering column in the areas indicated by the arrows inward on both sides and pull the lower trim down.
Disconnect the plug connector of the air bag assembly (orange).
Where present, disconnect the steering wheel switch connector.
On the back of the steering wheel, unscrew the 2 cap screws T27.
Lift the airbag assembly and disconnect the following connectors:
- for the squib -1-;
- for sound signal -2-;
- for steering wheel switches -3-.
Remove the airbag assembly and place it with the elastic part up, eg in the luggage compartment.
Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position. In this case, the marks on the steering mechanism and the steering wag must match.
Remove bolt -arrow-.
Attention: After releasing the bolt, the spring -F-, which locks the contact ring in the neutral position against turning, becomes movable. Never turn the steering wheel with the fastening bolt released, otherwise the slip ring will be damaged.
Mark the position of the steering wheel on the steering shaft with a scriber or paint.
Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft by hand. If necessary, use a standard puller to remove.
Caution: Do not hit the steering wheel. Make sure that the wires are not damaged during removal.
Installation
Check the position of the steering wheel slip ring. Labels -1- must match. If the slip ring has been rotated or it is not fixed, then its installation in the neutral position is carried out as follows. Press spring -F- down (drawing W-4043) and turn the slip ring to the left and right as far as it will go. Count the total number of turns of the ring and divide this number in half. Turn the slip ring halfway from one of the stops so that the marks -1- coincide. Release spring -F-.
Check that the turn signal lever is in the middle position, otherwise the cam may be damaged when putting on the steering wheel.
Put the steering wheel on the steering shaft pins so that the marks made before removal coincide. When doing so, make sure that locking pin -1- is positioned in recess -2-.
Tighten the steering wheel bolt to 65 Nm.
Caution: Never turn the steering wheel with the fastening bolt released, otherwise the slip ring will be damaged.
Fit the airbag assembly and connect the connectors, see illustration. "Withdrawal".
Insert the air bag assembly into the steering wheel and it is very easy, with a torque of 2 Nm, to tighten the mount. Make sure that the electrical wires are not pinched.
Connect the plug connectors of the airbag unit (orange) and steering wheel switches on the steering column.
Position the lower trim of the steering column, press down and secure. In this case, the latches -2- must enter the latch -1-.
Note: the figure shows the connection of the facings from the inside.
Fasten the cover with three screws.
Connect ground wire to negative pole (-) battery. Set clock.
Carry out a test drive and check the position of the steering wheel when driving in a straight line. The upper spokes of the steering wheel must be in a horizontal position.
If the steering wheel is tilted, it should be removed and rearranged.
Check the operation of the sound signal.
Check the automatic return of the turn signal lever to the middle position.
Note: A dirty or sticky steering wheel can be cleaned with household products and warm water, do not use abrasive materials for cleaning.
