Removal and installation the steering wheel (BMW 3 Series E36)

Note: All instructions are given for a steering wheel without an Airbag system. For safety reasons, the removal of the Airbag device should only be carried out in a special workshop.

If the steering wheel is out of alignment, it can be adjusted on the splined connection by a maximum of 2 teeth.

Caution: If this wheel movement is not sufficient, check the front wheel alignment.

Removal

Remove the BMW emblem with a small screwdriver.



Loosen the bolt and remove the washer.

Mark the relative positions of the steering wheel and steering shaft with paint or marking tape.

Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft. Caution: The steering wheel can only be removed when the steering column lock is unlocked.

Installation

Lubricate the contact ring of the horn with the product "Kontaktfix" (company N. Bauer, Heidelberg).

Check that the turn signal switch is in the middle position, otherwise the cam may be damaged when putting the steering wheel on.

Place the steering wheel on the steering shaft so that the markings made during removal match.

Apply the spacer washer.

Tighten the new self-locking nut to a tightening torque of 65 Nm.

Insert the BMW emblem into the soft cover.

Make a test drive and check the position of the steering wheel while driving straight ahead. The upper spoke of the steering wheel should be horizontal.

If the steering wheel is positioned at an angle, it can be moved in the splines.

Check the operation of the sound signal.

Check the automatic turn-off of the turn signal switch.

Note: A dirty or sticky steering wheel can be cleaned with a neutral detergent and warm water; do not use any cleaning agents.
