Attention: All instructions are given for the steering wheel without an airbag system. For safety reasons, airbag devices must only be removed by a specialist workshop.
If the steering wheel installation is knocked down, it can be rearranged on the spline connection by a maximum of 2 teeth.
Caution: If this wheel movement is not sufficient, check the front wheel toe-in.
Withdrawal
Remove the BMW emblem with a small screwdriver.
Loosen nut 1 and remove washer 2.
Mark the relative position of the steering wheel and steering shaft with paint or a rake.
Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft.
Attention: The steering wheel can only be removed when the lock on the steering column is unlocked.
Installation
Lubricate the contact ring of the horn with "Kontaktfix" (firm H.Bauer, Heidelberg).
Check that the direction indicator switch is in the middle position, otherwise the cam may be damaged when putting on the steering wheel.
Put the steering wheel on the steering shaft so that the markings made when removing the markings match.
Apply spacer.
Screw in a new self-locking nut with a tightening torque of 80 Nm.
Insert the BMW logo into the soft cover.
Carry out a test drive and check the position of the steering wheel while driving in the forward direction. The upper spoke of the steering wheel must be horizontal.
If the steering wheel is set at an angle, it can be moved in the slots
Check the functioning of the horn.
Check the automatic turn off of the turn signal switch
Note: A soiled or sticky steering wheel can be cleaned with a neutral detergent and warm water; do not use any scrubbing agents.
