Safety precautions when working with an inflatable airbag (BMW 5 Series E39)

            0

Replacement and inspection of the airbag unit should only be performed in a specialized workshop. Under no circumstances should any changes be made to the system.

The steering wheel under the airbag may only be replaced with a steering wheel approved for use by the vehicle manufacturer.

The steering wheel airbag panel must not be covered, covered or modified in any other way. It must be cleaned with a dry or water-moistened cloth, and with cleaning agents approved for use by the vehicle manufacturer.

The airbag does not replace the seat belt. All occupants of the vehicle must be fastened with a seat belt, only then will optimal protection be ensured.

The driver's seat should be adjusted according to the size of his body.

No child restraint systems may be installed on the passenger seat next to the driver. Children under 12 years of age may only be transported in the rear seats.

There should be no objects between the passenger and the airbag.

Do not use the cover of the passenger airbag assembly next to the driver as a shelf.

If the airbag has deployed as a result of the collision, the control unit, airbag assembly and contact assembly must be replaced with new parts (workshop work).

Before working on the airbag assembly or the electrical system, disconnect the battery ground (-) cable. Then disconnect the airbag assembly plug connector on the steering column.

When removed, always place the inflatable cushion assembly so that its elastic part faces upward.

When performing long-term repairs to your vehicle, the airbag assembly should be kept locked up.

The air cushion assembly must not be treated with lubricants, cleaning agents or other similar substances (aggressive) means.

The airbag assembly and its control unit are very sensitive to impacts. If they have fallen from a height of more than 50 cm, they cannot be reinstalled. If they have fallen from a lower height, the airbag assembly must be checked in a workshop.

When carrying out welding work, connect the clamps to the poles of the welding machine only immediately before welding. In any case, the battery ground wire must be disconnected. Finally, the negative pole of the battery must be insulated to avoid accidental electrical contact. Disconnect the plug connector of the airbag connecting it to the gas generator.
