Steering — General Information (BMW 5 Series E39)

            0

The steering system consists of a steering wheel, a steering shaft, a steering gear, and steering rods. The steering wheel is screwed to the steering shaft, which transmits the movement of the steering wheel to the steering gear. Due to the presence of a toothed engagement in the steering gear, the toothed rack of the steering gear can move to the right and left.

To facilitate control when parking, the car is equipped with a hydraulic power steering as standard. The power steering is provided depending on the engine crankshaft speed. At high speeds, the power steering is insignificant, while at low speeds, on the contrary, it is more significant.

Depending on the model and version, steering is made easier by a hydraulic booster whose effect depends on the vehicle's speed. As a result, the effort required to turn the steering wheel to the stop and when the vehicle is stationary is insignificant, while at high speeds, on the contrary, due to the reduced effect of the booster, a greater sense of the road and steering precision are achieved.

The power steering consists of an oil pump, an oil tank and pipelines. The oil pump is driven by a poly V-belt. The pump takes oil from the tank and delivers it to the steering gear under high pressure. The steering gear control unit provides the necessary support for the force on the steering wheel.
The driver's airbag is folded up under a cover in the center of the steering wheel. In the event of a severe frontal collision, the control unit ignites a small explosive charge in the airbag. The non-toxic gases released during this process fill the airbag within a few milliseconds. This is enough time to cushion the impact of the driver's upper body as it rushes forward. Within a few seconds, the airbag folds up again as the gases flow out through special openings. Work on the airbag should only be performed by a BMW repair shop.

Caution: Always replace the self-locking nuts. Welding and straightening work on steering components is not permitted. Work on the airbag must only be carried out by a specialist workshop, explosion hazard!
