Replacing the fuel filter on gasoline engines (BMW 3 Series E36)
The following special tool is required:
The fuel filter is located in the engine compartment at the bottom of the left side member. It is only accessible from below.
Raise the car.
Use a clamp to close off fuel hose "1" from the fuel pump to the filter.
Close the fuel hose "2" with a clamp and disconnect it from the filter, having first released the clamp.
Release the clamping strap on the filter and pull the filter with the fuel hose "1" downwards.
Disconnect the fuel hose from the fuel filter, having first loosened the clamp.
Collect the leaking gasoline in a container.
Connect the hose going to the distribution pipe to the new filter "1" and secure with a clamp.
Insert the filter and screw the bracket. Ensure the correct installation position of the fuel filter. Arrow "2" on the filter body should indicate the direction of fuel flow.
Connect the second hose "3" to the filter and secure with a clamp.
Remove the clamps from the hoses.
Place the gearbox in neutral and apply the handbrake.
Start the engine at idle speed and check the tightness of the fuel hose connections.
Lower the car.
- Jack and stands.
- 2 small screw clamps for closing hoses.
- A container for collecting leaking gasoline. The following wearing parts must be purchased:
- Fuel filter according to engine type.
- 2 clamps for fastening hoses.
The fuel filter is located in the engine compartment at the bottom of the left side member. It is only accessible from below.
Removal
Warning: Do not make open fire. Ensure adequate ventilation in the workplace. Gasoline vapors are hazardous to health!
Raise the car.

Use a clamp to close off fuel hose "1" from the fuel pump to the filter.
Close the fuel hose "2" with a clamp and disconnect it from the filter, having first released the clamp.
Release the clamping strap on the filter and pull the filter with the fuel hose "1" downwards.
Disconnect the fuel hose from the fuel filter, having first loosened the clamp.
Collect the leaking gasoline in a container.
Installation

Connect the hose going to the distribution pipe to the new filter "1" and secure with a clamp.
Insert the filter and screw the bracket. Ensure the correct installation position of the fuel filter. Arrow "2" on the filter body should indicate the direction of fuel flow.
Connect the second hose "3" to the filter and secure with a clamp.
Remove the clamps from the hoses.
Place the gearbox in neutral and apply the handbrake.

Lower the car.
