Gasoline engine: replacing the fuel filter (BMW 7 Series E32)

The following tools are required:
  • Jack and stands.
  • Two small screw clamps for clamping fuel hoses.
  • A container for draining leaking gasoline.

The following consumables are required:
  • Fuel filter of the correct type.
  • Two screw clamps for fastening fuel hoses.

The fuel filter is located on the left side member by the driver. Access to it is possible only from below.

Raise and support the vehicle, remove the lower engine cover (mudguard).

Remove the trim in the fuel filter area.

Remove the trim in the fuel filter area.


Clamp the fuel hoses in front and behind the fuel filter with screw clamps.

Loosen the clamps and pull the fuel hoses off the filter.

Loosen the filter retaining band by moving it apart and pull out the filter.

Insert the new fuel filter and secure the holders, paying attention to the correct position of the filter installation. The arrow on the filter housing should indicate the direction of fuel flow, i.e. directed towards the engine.

Place the fuel hoses onto the fuel filter fittings and secure them with clamps.

Remove the screw clamps.

Apply the parking brake and put the transmission in neutral. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks at the hose connections.

Install the trim and lower the vehicle.
