Manual transmission — oil change (BMW 7 Series E32)

Necessary consumables:

Oil (liquid) ATF brands:
  • ESSO: ATF Dexron D-21065;
  • SHELL: ATF Dexron II D-21666;
  • MOBIL: ATF 220 D-20104;
  • TOTAL: Dexron II D-20356.

For information on the use of other brands of ATF fluid, please contact your workshop.

The fluid in the gearbox should be replaced every 80 thousand km as part of maintenance. In between, during each maintenance, the gearbox should be checked for faults, and if necessary, the fluid level should be checked. It should reach the lower edge of the filler hole.

Before changing the oil, the gearbox needs to be warmed up, for which take a 15-minute test drive.

Raise and support the vehicle and remove the lower engine cover.

Remove the filler plug from the gearbox.

Place a suitable container underneath and unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the gearbox.

Tighten the drain plug (bolt) to 50 Nm. The amount of oil (fluid) for a manual transmission is 1.25-1.75 l.



Caution: Be careful not to overfill the oil once it starts to flow out of the hole.


Tighten the filler plug to 50 Nm.

Lower the vehicle and install the lower engine cover.
