Checking the steering play (BMW 7 Series E32)

Set the steering wheel to the center position.

Move the steering wheel back and forth through the open window. There should be no more than 25 mm of play around the outside of the steering wheel before the wheels begin to move.

If there is more play in the steering wheel, you need to check the steering rods, steering gear and play in the front axle supports.

Move the steering rods back and forth vigorously by hand. There should be no play in the ball joints, otherwise the joints or steering rods need to be replaced.
