Every 38,000 km or every two years.
The tools needed for this job include axle stands to support the vehicle in a raised position, a socket wrench to loosen the drain plug, a drain pan, newspapers and clean rags. You should also have the required amount of transmission fluid (see Types of Lubricants and Fluids Used in Table of sizes and adjustment data at the end of this Guide).
Transmission oil is drained while hot (i.e. immediately after a car trip); it is easier to remove dirt from hot oil. Since the oil will be hot, it is better to work with rubber gloves.
1. Jack up the car and securely place it on axle stands. Try to position the car as level as possible.
2. Place the necessary equipment under the vehicle, being careful not to touch hot exhaust system components.

3. Place a drain pan under the transmission and remove the fill plug from the side of the transmission. Loosen the drain plug.
4. Carefully remove the drain plug. Be careful not to burn yourself with hot oil.
5. Allow the oil to drain completely. Clean the drain plug thoroughly, then reinstall and tighten securely.
6. Read the instructions in Section Checking the oil level in a manual transmission and fill the transmission with new oil, then install the filler cap and tighten it securely.
7. Lower the car to the ground. After driving the first few kilometers, check for leaks from the drain plug.
