AT transmission oil change (BMW 7 Series E38)

Below is a description of ATF replacement. Manual transmission oil replacement is similar.


1. Warm up the ATF fluid and turn off the engine.

2. Unscrew the drain plug and drain the ATF into a previously prepared container. Check the condition of the ATF.

3. Tighten the drain plug with a new seal to the required torque and unscrew the filler plug.

4. With the engine off, fill the AT with fluid until it starts to flow out of the filler hole.

5. Start the engine, move the selector lever to position "P". Turn on the low beam (selector lever in position "N").

6. Add more ATF until it starts to flow out of the filler hole. Then tighten the filler plug with new compaction and with the required force.

7. Press the brake pedal, set the winter mode of the automatic transmission and move the selector lever through all positions. Check the automatic transmission level using a diagnostic device.

8. After running the engine for approximately 5 minutes, check for any ATF leaks.
