Replacing the air cleaner filter element (BMW 7 Series E38)

Engine M51


1. Pull up the air filter cover.

2. Remove the old filter element and install a new one, after cleaning the channels on the air intake and outlet sides.

3. Close the lid.

Engines M52, M57

1. Disconnect the corrugated hose from the air filter cover.



1. Disconnect the corrugated hose from the air filter cover.


2. Remove the 4 bolts on the top of the cover.

3. Lift and fold back the air cleaner cover. Remove the filter element from the air cleaner housing.

4. Clean the housing and install a new filter element.

5. Replace the roof and securely connect the corrugated hose to it.

To install the lid, first hang it from below.


Engines M60, M62, M67



1. Press the staples (1).

2. On engines M60 B30 and M67 loosen the air hose clamp (2) and disconnect the hose.

3. On the engine M62 disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor wiring connector.

4. On the engine M67 disconnect the air flow meter connector.

5. Remove the upper part of the air cleaner housing.

6. Remove the filter element from the bottom of the air cleaner housing, wipe the housing and install a new filter element.

7. Install the removed components.

Engine M73



1. On right bank of cylinders follow the steps in paragraphs 2 through 4.

2. Press the lock (2) and disconnect the connector (1).

3. Press back the clamps (1), loosen the clamp (2) and disconnect the hose.

4. Disconnect the connector (3), lift and remove the upper cover of the air cleaner.

5. On left bank of cylinders press the clamps (1), loosen the clamp (2) and disconnect the hose. Disconnect the connector (3) and remove the upper cover of the air cleaner.

6. Remove the filter element from the bottom of the air cleaner housing, wipe the housing and install a new filter element. Install the removed components.
