Checking the condition of the protective covers of the CV joints of the drive shafts (BMW 7 Series E38)

1. Protective covers of drive shafts are very important elements, as they protect constant velocity joints (CV joints) from dirt, water and other foreign bodies that cause damage. External contamination of protective covers with oil and grease can lead to premature failure of the cover material, so it is recommended to periodically wash the covers with soap and water.



2. Inspect the boots for tears, cracks, and loose clamps. If signs of cracks or grease leakage are found, the boot should be replaced.

3. At the same time, check the general condition of the CV joints by holding the shaft and trying to turn the wheel at the same time. Try again by holding the inner CV joint and turning the shaft. Any noticeable play indicates wear in the joint, wear in the shaft grooves, or a loose shaft lock nut.
