            0

1. Raise the vehicle and place it on reliable supports. Slowly rotate the rear wheel. Carefully inspect the condition of the rubber boot of the outer constant velocity joint (CV joint). The most common defects of the boot are cracks, abrasions and decomposition of the rubber, which can cause grease to leak out of the joints and water to get into the joint. To detect defects, squeeze the boot (Fig. 21.1). Also check the serviceability and reliability of the boot clamps. Inspect the boot of the inner joint in the same way. If any of the above defects are detected, replace both boots (see chapter 8).

2. At the same time, check the general condition of the joints themselves. To do this, hold the shaft and try to turn the wheel. Then, hold the inner joint and try to turn the drive shaft. Any noticeable play means wear of the joints or splines of the drive shaft, or loosening of the hub mounting nut on the drive shaft. Repeat these checks on the second shaft.
