1. Raise the vehicle and place it on secure stands. Slowly rotate the rear wheel. Carefully inspect the condition of the rubber boot of the outer constant velocity joint (SHRUS). Cover defects can most often be cracks, abrasions and decomposition of rubber, due to which grease can leak from the hinges, and water can get into the hinge. Squeeze the case to check for defects (pic. 21.1). Also check the serviceability and reliability of tightening the clamps of the cover. Inspect the inner hinge boot in the same way. If any of these defects are found, replace both covers (see chapter 8).
2. At the same time, check the general condition of the hinges themselves. To do this, while holding the shaft, try to turn the wheel. Then, while holding the inner joint, try to rotate the drive shaft. Any noticeable play in the driveshaft pins or splines is worn, or the hub nut on the driveshaft is loose. Repeat these checks on the second shaft.
