Replacing the air filter element (BMW 3 Series E46)
The engine air filter element should only be replaced when it is dirty. Under normal operating conditions, the replacement interval is up to 100,000 km. The filter element should not be cleaned with gasoline or lubricated with oil. Do not blow out the filter with compressed air.
Petrol engines
Removal

1. Open the clamps "1" of the filter cover.
2. Slightly lift the filter cover all the way around.

3. Lift the filter cover and remove filter element "1" (refer to the accompanying illustration).
4. Wipe the filter housing with a damp cloth.
Installation
1. Insert a new filter element into the filter housing.
2. Replace the cover and secure it with the clamps.
Diesel engine 320d
Removal
1. Remove the HVAC air filter element, refer to Section Replacing the cabin air filter element.

2. Open the cable channel at the bottom of the filter housing "2" and remove the cable.
3. Unscrew bolts "1" and remove the lower part of the filter housing "2".
4. Remove the oil filler cap.

5. Unscrew bolts "1", remove engine trim "2".

6. Loosen screws "1" and remove the air cleaner cover at the cylinder head. In the accompanying illustration, socket wrenches are visible on both left screws.
7. Take the filter element back out. Wipe the filter housing with a damp cloth.
Installation

1. Install the new filter element into the filter housing. The rear holder in the illustration points downwards.
2. Fasten the air filter cover to the cylinder head. Note: The outer fastening bolt between the air filter box and the engine compartment wall is inconvenient to tighten. It is recommended to first fasten the filter cover without the filter element to understand how the specified bolt is installed. Then install the filter element and fasten the cover first with the specified bolt.
3. Secure the air intake hose and engine cover.
4. Screw on the oil filler cap.
5. Secure the bottom of the air box.
6. Place the cable in the cable channel at the bottom of the filter housing. Close the cable channel.
7. Reinstall the HVAC air filter element, refer to Section Replacing the cabin air filter element.
