- Replacing the air filter element
Replacing the air filter element (BMW 5 Series E39)
No special tools are required to perform the work. The following parts are required for replacement:
Petrol engine: Press in the retaining clips on the right and left of the filter element valve and pull out the valve.
525tds model car: disconnect the intake manifold from the engine. Loosen the bolts and press the cover off the cylinder head.
Remove the replacement filter element.
Wipe the filter housing with a cloth.
If the filter element is slightly dirty, turn the dirty side down and knock it out carefully. Replace the oily filter in any case.
Insert the new replacement element into the air filter housing. The sealing gasket around the perimeter should fit into the groove.
Petrol engine: Insert the valve and snap both retaining clips into place.
525tds: Tighten the cylinder head cover fastener evenly. Attach the intake manifold to the engine.
Release clamps -1, then turn the air duct in the direction of the arrow and pull it out.
Release the retaining clip-2-
Remove the fine filter cover "3".
Release spring clamp "4" and pull out the filter housing with an upward movement.
Move the fine air filter housing in the direction of the arrow and pull it out upwards.
Open cover "1".
Remove the corrugated cover "2".
Remove bolts "3".
Remove the air filter cover "4".
Remove the replacement air filter element.
Insert the replacement air filter element with support "1" into the guide with a downward movement.
Subsequent installation is carried out in reverse order.

- Replacement air filter element. When purchasing a replacement part, please note that depending on the installed engine, replacement elements have different designs.
Removal

Petrol engine: Press in the retaining clips on the right and left of the filter element valve and pull out the valve.

525tds model car: disconnect the intake manifold from the engine. Loosen the bolts and press the cover off the cylinder head.
Remove the replacement filter element.
Wipe the filter housing with a cloth.
If the filter element is slightly dirty, turn the dirty side down and knock it out carefully. Replace the oily filter in any case.
Caution: Do not moisten the filter element with gasoline or oil. Do not blow the filter element with compressed air.
Installation
Insert the new replacement element into the air filter housing. The sealing gasket around the perimeter should fit into the groove.

525tds: Tighten the cylinder head cover fastener evenly. Attach the intake manifold to the engine.
Only car model 530d
Removal

Release clamps -1, then turn the air duct in the direction of the arrow and pull it out.
Release the retaining clip-2-
Remove the fine filter cover "3".
Release spring clamp "4" and pull out the filter housing with an upward movement.
Move the fine air filter housing in the direction of the arrow and pull it out upwards.

Open cover "1".
Remove the corrugated cover "2".
Remove bolts "3".
Remove the air filter cover "4".

Remove the replacement air filter element.
Installation

Insert the replacement air filter element with support "1" into the guide with a downward movement.
Subsequent installation is carried out in reverse order.
