Gas engine
Fuel filter replacement
The following tool is required to complete the job:
- Jack and stand-up goats.
- 2 small hose clamps.
- Container for catching escaping gasoline.
You need to purchase the following replacement parts:
- Fuel filter for the respective engine.
- You may need 2 clamps to secure the fuel lines.
The fuel filter is located at the left longitudinal beam, in the area under the driver. The filter can only be accessed from below.
Withdrawal
Attention: No open flame, fire hazard! Constantly take care of the ventilation of the workplace. Gasoline vapors are harmful to health!
Raise the car. Remove the lower engine compartment cover, see p. 10.
Loosen the fastening of the lining in the filter area.
Clamp the fuel hoses before and after the fuel pump with a clamp.
Loosen clamps -1- and -3-, remove hoses from filter.
Loosen clamp -2- of the filter, loosen it slightly and pull out the filter.
Caution: Collect leaking gasoline in a suitable container, avoiding environmental pollution.
Installation
Insert the filter and tighten with a clamp. Pay attention to the correct installation position of the filter. The arrow -2- on the filter housing points in the direction of fuel flow, i.e. to the engine.
Push fuel hoses onto filter fittings -1- and -3- and secure with clamps.
Remove the compression clamps from the fuel hoses.
Place the shift lever in neutral, apply the handbrake, start the engine and check the fuel line connections for leaks.
Attach trim and lower vehicle.

Removing water from the fuel filter
Water from the fuel filter must be removed every 10,000 km or at least once a year, every 40,000 km the filter must be replaced. The filter is located in the engine compartment on the left side. A suitable vessel is required to drain the settled water.
Attention: Leaking diesel fuel must be wiped off immediately, especially from rubber parts (cooling system hoses), otherwise, over time, the rubber parts are destroyed.
Water removal
Attach a suitable hose to the drain nipple, diameter 8 mm. Place a suitable container underneath for draining.
Release valve -2- at the bottom of the filter by hand a few turns. If the valve does not release, use a pipe wrench with leather or paper gaskets.
Drain approximately 200 cm3 of sludge until clean diesel fuel flows out. Tighten the water drain valve by hand.
Press the wire clamp and remove the fuel line from the top of the filter to the fuel pump. Ask an assistant to start the engine until fuel starts to flow out of the filter, then stop starting. This operation allows you to quickly remove air from the fuel system.
Caution: Collect escaping diesel fuel in a suitable container.
Connect the fuel line, replace the damaged gasket, use technical vaseline to facilitate installation. Start the engine. After repeatedly pressing the accelerator pedal, the fuel must flow to the high pressure fuel pump through a transparent fuel line without air bubbles, while the fuel system must be sealed.
Filter replacement
Drain all liquid from the fuel filter, following the same steps as when draining water.
Unscrew the fuel filter from the flange by hand. If it sits very firmly, unscrew it with a standard wrench with a tie-down collar, for example, HAZET 2170.
If there is no such key at hand, unscrew the 2 bolts in the upper part of the filter and remove the filter together with the flange. Remove the inlet and outlet fuel lines, having previously clamped them with clamps. In addition, disconnect the plug of the heating system of the filter flange. Clamp the flange in a vice.
Fill the new filter up to the brim with diesel fuel and hand-tighten to the flange.
Attention: Do not tighten the filter tightly. When the seal lies on the filter flange, then tighten the filter another ½ turn. Pay attention to the instructions on the filter housing.
Mount flange with filter and connect plug and fuel supply hose. Replace damaged gasket, use technical vaseline to facilitate installation.
Ask an assistant to start the engine until fuel starts to flow out of the filter, then stop starting. This operation allows you to quickly remove air from the fuel system.
Caution: Collect escaping diesel fuel in a suitable container.
Connect the fuel filter wire to the fuel pump. Replace damaged gasket, use technical vaseline to facilitate installation.
Start the engine. After repeatedly pressing the accelerator pedal, the fuel must flow to the high pressure fuel pump through a transparent fuel line without air bubbles, while the fuel system must be sealed.

Fuel filter replacement
Withdrawal
Switch off the ignition.
Attention: If fuel comes out, collect it with a thick cloth.
When working on oil, coolant or fuel circulation systems, it is necessary to close the generator to avoid contamination. If liquid penetrates into the generator, then in the future this can lead to its failure.
Press retaining springs -1- down.
Disconnect fuel lines.
Unscrew nuts -2-.
Remove fuel filter assembly -3-.
Note: Do not remove fuel cooler -4-.
Unscrew filter -1- from fuel filter unit -2-.
Note: If the fuel filter -1- is very firmly seated, use a standard wrench with a band clip or BMW special tool 114650 to loosen it.
Installation
Screw the fuel filter to the fuel filter assembly. The tightening torque is indicated by embossing on the filter housing.
Insert the fuel filter assembly and screw down.
Insert retaining springs and connect fuel lines.
Removing air from the fuel filter
Switch on the ignition for approximately one minute. During this time, the fuel priming pump fills the filter with fuel, causing air to be expelled from the filter.
