- Measuring tool from BMW.
Replacement materials:
- Only if the check reveals wear on the clutch: driven disc.
The clutch is automatically adjusted and does not require maintenance. Therefore, the wear of the clutch disc is not determined by the free travel of the clutch pedal. The thickness of the clutch disc is determined by a special control and measuring tool in a dismantled state.
Note: If a special measuring tool is not available, the clutch function can be checked as follows. Engage 5th gear, start the engine with the clutch pedal depressed. Release the clutch pedal while simultaneously depressing the accelerator pedal. If the engine does not stall, the driven disk of the clutch is worn. This check should not be performed frequently, since the clutch is subject to high loads.
As part of the maintenance, the thickness of the clutch disc must be checked every 80,000 km.
Raise and remove the car lower motor edema housing.

Remove the clutch slave cylinder from the gearbox housing by loosening the "arrow" fastening. Do not disconnect the pipeline from the slave cylinder.

Insert the BMW measuring device as shown in the figure into the opening for the working cylinder and press in the direction of the white arrow. Then read the scale reading -black arrow-; the clutch friction linings must be replaced when the red area is reached on the scale.
