Changing the oil in the main gear (BMW 5 Series E39)

            0

Special tool required:
  • Wrenches with external Allen keys of 10 and 12 mm for filler and drain plugs.

Replacement materials:
  • Hypoid oil according to BMW specification: SAE 75W-90.
  • Two aluminum sealing rings, size A22x27.
  • Before changing the oil, the main gear housing should be warm to the touch, if necessary, perform a 15-minute drive.
  • Raise the vehicle to a horizontal position.

Raise the vehicle to a horizontal position.

Unscrew plug "1" of the filler hole using an external Allen key.

When a small amount of oil comes out of the hole, the oil level is normal and the housing is sealed. Otherwise, check with your finger whether the oil reaches the bottom of the filler hole.

Attention: If there is a large loss of oil, find the cause and eliminate it.

Unscrew plug "2" of the drain hole, collect the leaking oil.

Caution: Do not drain oil onto the ground!

The drain plug is magnetic to attract metal filings. Wipe the plug clean of metal filings, then tighten it with a new sealing ring to 50 Nm.

Add oil using a hand oiler.

Oil specification: Hypoid transmission oil SAE 75W-90. Only transmission oils approved by BMW should be used (the corresponding inscription must be on the packaging).

Filling capacity: 520i, 523i, 528i, 535i, 525tds models - 1.0 liters; car model 540i - 1.2 liters.

Note: hypoid oil is viscous, so do not drink too much oil at once. Place a container under the main gear, wait for a pause, if necessary, add oil to the required level, collect excess oil.

Tighten the filler plug with a new gasket to a torque of 50 Nm.
