Changing the oil in the main gear (BMW 3 Series E46)

1. Place the vehicle on a level surface.

2. Locate the filler/inspection plug for the final drive. This plug is located on the rear cover of the unit (Fig. 10.2). Unscrew the plug and remove the sealing ring.

3. Place a container under the final drive, then remove the drain plug (it is located at the bottom of the back cover) and let the oil drain. Remove the sealing ring.

4. Inspect the sealing rings. If they are damaged, replace them.

5. After all the oil has drained, place the sealing ring on the drain plug and tighten the plug to the specified torque.

6. Fill the final drive through the filler/inspection hole with the recommended type of oil (see chapter 1). The oil level should reach the lower edge of the inspection hole. Tighten the plug and take the car for a short drive.

7. After the trip, park the car on a horizontal surface again. Unscrew the filler/inspection hole plug. The oil level should reach the lower edge of the hole. To set the required oil level, do the following. Wait until the oil stops flowing out of the inspection hole. Add oil until the oil starts flowing out again.

8. Once the oil level has been established, screw in the plug and tighten it to the specified torque.
