Note. On some models, a rubber clutch is installed between the cardan shaft and the gearbox instead of the cardan joint (see paragraph 7).
Examination
1. Worn universal joints cause vibration in the transmission, noise during acceleration of the car, as well as metallic clicks. It is not necessary to remove the cardan shaft to check the hinges. Only the exhaust system and heat shields need to be removed (see chapter 4A).
2. If the cardan shaft is not removed from the car. try turning it side to side while holding the gearbox or final drive flange. Play between the propeller shaft and the gearbox or final drive flanges indicates wear on the universal joints.
3. If the cardan shaft is removed, you can check the joints as follows. While holding the shaft with one hand, turn the shaft flange with the other hand. The presence of play indicates wear on the hinge.
Replacement
4. At the time of writing this manual, there was no information on the availability of spare parts for the cardan shaft. In this regard, in case of wear of the cardan joints, the replacement of the cardan shaft assembly is required. For more information, contact your BMW dealer.
5. If it is necessary to replace the cardan shaft, we recommend that you first consult with a specialist. It is possible that the cardan shaft can be repaired, or a restored cardan shaft can be purchased.
