Checking and replacing cardan joints (BMW 5 Series E28)

Wear of cardan joints is accompanied by vibration in the transmission, noise during acceleration and a sharp metallic grinding sound when the bearings disintegrate.

U-joints are easy to check for wear without removing the driveshaft. To check the rear U-joint, try rotating the shaft while holding the transmission flange. Play between the driveshaft and the front or rear flanges indicates excessive wear.

If the driveshaft has already been removed from the vehicle, the U-joints can be checked by holding the shaft in one hand and turning the crosspiece holder or flange with the other. If axial play is noticeable, replace the driveshaft.

Replacement

Cardan joints cannot be repaired at home. Therefore, in case of wear, the cardan shaft and joints should be replaced as a whole.

Sometimes it is possible to exchange the cardan shaft for a refurbished one - consult with car service specialists.
