Replacing the constant velocity joint of the cardan shaft (BMW 5 Series E28)

            0

The constant velocity joint (CV joint) on the front of the driveshaft on some models is bolted directly to the transmission flange. Replacing it requires removing the driveshaft. Don't forget to replace the clamps, snap rings, boots, gaskets, and dust boots.

1. Remove the driveshaft (see section Removal and installation the propeller shaft).

2. Remove the boot clamp from the rear of the CV joint.

3. At the front of the joint, remove the retaining ring that secures the CV joint to the shaft. Remove the joint from the shaft using a suitable puller (the joint is secured to the shaft with a special locking compound applied to the thread), therefore it is difficult to remove without the help of a puller.

4. Remove the hinge mounting bolts. The shoulders of the bolt heads are knurled, so you will have to knock the bolts out of the hinge.

5. Fill the new CV joint with 80 grams of special grease. Push the grease into the cage.

To avoid the balls falling out, do not rock the inner CV joint race during packing.

6. Install new gasket and boot.

7. Install the bolts and holders into the connecting holes. Clean the splines of the driveshaft and apply a small amount of locking sealant to them.

8. Install the protective cover on the shaft. Install the joint and tap it with a wooden block.

9. Install a new snap ring onto the shaft and a new clamp onto the boot.

10. Install the cardan shaft (see section Removal and installation the propeller shaft).
