Removal and installation the differential housing (BMW 5 Series E28)

Removal



1. Jack up the rear of the vehicle and secure it on axle stands. Drain the differential fluid (see chapter Routine car maintenance).

2. Disconnect the propeller shaft from the pinion flange (see section Removal and installation the propeller shaft). Hang the end of the driveshaft on a piece of wire to avoid damaging the center bearing.

3. Unbolt the inner ends of the drive shafts from the differential flanges (see section Removal and installation drive shafts). Hang the drive shafts on pieces of wire to avoid damaging the CV joints.

4. Disconnect the wires from the speedometer sensor, remove the two sensor mounting bolts (one of them is indicated by an arrow) and remove the sensor.

5. Support the differential with a trolley jack.

7. Loosen the front differential mounting bolt (indicated by the arrow).

8. Lower the differential and remove it from under the vehicle.

Installation



1. Place the differential housing in place on its supports and install the bolts (do not tighten them until they are all in place), then tighten the fasteners securely.

2. Perform the rest of the installation procedure in the reverse order of removal.
