Examination
Although BMW does not specify a specific interval for checking the flexible coupling located between the front section of the driveshaft and the transmission, it should be inspected every time you work under the vehicle. The clutch is made of rubber and is therefore susceptible to the impact of road gravel, the heat generated by the exhaust system, and the twisting of the driveshaft. Inspect the coupling for cracks, breaks, loose pieces, and deformations. Replace worn or damaged clutch.
Replacement
1. Remove cardan shaft (see Section Removal and installation of cardan shaft).
2. Give nuts and bolts of an elastic coupling and remove the coupling from a cardan shaft.
It will be easier to install the bolts on the flexible coupling if you fix it stationary with a piece of hose.
3. Install a new coupling with NEW self-locking nuts. If the coupling is marked with arrows, the arrows should point towards the flange levers and not towards the bolt heads. Tighten the nuts to the required torque.
4. Install the cardan shaft (see Section Removal and installation of cardan shaft).
