Checking the operation and replacing the elastic coupling (BMW 5 Series E28)

Examination

Although BMW does not specify specific inspection intervals for the flexible coupling located between the front section of the driveshaft and the transmission, it should be inspected every time you work under the vehicle. The coupling is made of rubber and is therefore susceptible to the effects of road impact, heat from the exhaust system, and twisting of the driveshaft. Inspect the coupling for cracks, tears, loose parts, and deformation. Replace any worn or damaged coupling.

Replacement

1. Remove the driveshaft (see section Removal and installation the propeller shaft).



2. Loosen the nuts and bolts of the flexible coupling and remove the coupling from the cardan shaft.

It will be easier to install the bolts on the flexible coupling if you hold it in place with a piece of hose.

3. Install the new coupling with NEW self-locking nuts. If the coupling has arrow markings, they should point toward the flange arms, not the bolt heads. Tighten the nuts to the specified torque.



4. Install the cardan shaft (see section Removal and installation the propeller shaft).
