Examination
1. Wear of the bearing of the intermediate support leads to the appearance of noise and vibration when the vehicle is moving. Every time the driveshaft is removed (see paragraph 6) it is recommended to inspect the bearing. To gain access to the bearing without removing the driveshaft, the exhaust system and heat shields must be removed (see chapter 4A).
2. Inspect the bearing to make sure it rotates smoothly and has no play. If the bearing turns tight or has play, replace it. Also, inspect the rubber part of the support. If the support is damaged, replace it.
Replacement
3. Remove the cardan shaft (see paragraph 6).
4. Mark the relative position of the front and rear parts of the cardan shaft, then unscrew the support sleeve nut and separate both halves of the shaft. Remove the nut, washer and bushing, noting their location.
5. Remove the circlip and remove the rear bearing boot from the intermediate bearing.
6. Using a suitable puller, remove the bearing from the propeller shaft, then remove the front bearing boot.
7. Securely fasten the intermediate support bracket and press the bearing out of it.
8. Install a new bearing and press it into the bracket. Note that force should only be applied to the outer race of the bearing.
9. Thoroughly clean the splines of the cardan shaft, and carefully put the front bearing boot on it. Make sure the boot is installed correctly.
10. Press the bearing onto the cardan shaft. Note that force can only be applied to the inner race of the bearing.
11. Check that the bearing rotates smoothly, then slide a new rear bearing boot onto the driveshaft.
12. Apply some lubricant containing molybdenum disulphide (BMW recommends Molykote Longterm 2 grease) on the splines, screw the nut, put the washer and bushing on the front of the driveshaft.
13. Align the marks made before disconnecting the propeller shaft, then connect both halves of the propeller shaft.
14. Install the cardan shaft (see paragraph 6).
