Adjusting the lateral clearance in the engagement of the main gear gears (BMW 5 Series E12)

            0

Having determined the thickness of the adjusting washers installed between the outer bearing rings and the differential box (see "Differential assembly"), install the differential box into the rear axle housing.

Tighten the rear axle housing side cover mounting bolts to the specified torque, ensuring that there is no excessive tension between the teeth of the drive and driven gears.

Install the indicator on the rear axle housing ventilation hole cover and measure the lateral clearance in the final drive gear engagement (see values in subsection "Detailed technical specifications").

If the clearance is abnormal, adjust the clearance by swapping the bearing cap adjusting rings from one side of the rear axle housing to the other, without changing the overall thickness of the adjusting rings. If the clearance is excessive, remove the rings from the side opposite the driven gear and install them on the side of the driven gear to bring it closer to the pinion gear, and vice versa.
