Adjusting the gear shift cable (BMW 3 Series E36)
Set position of the shift lever (PRND etc.) transmitted to the box via a cable connection. Cable adjustment is required after installing the box or shift mechanism.
Set the lever to position "P".
Raise the car.
Loosen nut "2" of the cable on the lever.
Press lever "3" forward with your hand, i.e. in the direction of travel. This corresponds to the automatic transmission parking position.
Press the cable rod "4" back and in this position tighten the tension screw with a torque of 10 Nm. Again, in order not to bend the cable, hold it with a tension screwdriver.
Lower the car.
Unscrew the coupling nut "2".
Unscrew nuts "5" on the support and remove the cable.
When installing, insert the cable and first lock the nuts onto the support.
After this, adjust the cable, see above.
