Determining the thickness «X» of the washer «A» (BMW 5 Series E12)

Table of contents: Main gear of Gleason brand ↓ Main gear of the Klingelnberg brand ↓
After installing the "C" and "D" fixtures and the 4.05mm thick "A" shim, determine the thickness "X" of the adjusting shim as follows.

Main gear of Gleason brand

Determine the actual value "E₁" of the distance between the end of the drive gear and the differential axis using the formula:

E₁ = E + (+e),

where:
E is the nominal distance between the end of the drive gear and the differential axis, equal to 59.00 mm;
+e — correction to the nominal distance between the end of the drive gear and the differential axis, marked on the drive gear and equal to +0.15 mm

E₁ = 59.00 + 0.15 = 59.15 mm.

Determine size "Y" using the formula:

Y = b - B,

where:
b — the value of the indicator leg preload, equal to 4.00 mm;
B is the value measured by the indicator, equal to, say, 3.12 mm.

Y = 4.00 - 3.12 = 0.88 mm

Determine the calculated distance "E₂" between the end of the drive gear and the differential axis using the formula:

E₂ = C + D + Y,

where:
C is the thickness of the support mandrel, equal to, for example, 38 mm;
D is half the diameter of the control shaft, equal to, for example, 20 mm

E₂ = 38 + 20 + 0.88 = 58.88 mm.

Determine the thickness "X" of the adjustment ring using the formula:

X = A + (E₁ — E₂),

where: A is the thickness of the technological ring, equal to 4.05 mm

X = 4.05 + (59.15 - 58.88) = 4.32 mm.

Main gear of the Klingelnberg brand

The thickness of the adjusting ring is determined in the same way as for the Gleason main gear, taking into account that the nominal distance "E" between the end of the drive gear and the differential axis is 59 mm.

Remove the tools for adjusting the distance between the end of the drive pinion and the differential axle and remove the drive pinion from the axle housing.

Press the rear bearing inner race off the pinion gear using a puller with the correct size cup (or with the Rollex HM 89449 puller).

Install an adjusting ring of the required thickness in the groove of the drive gear with the chamfer of the inner diameter toward the end of the gear and press the inner ring of the rear bearing until it stops against the adjusting ring. Put a new spacer sleeve on the drive gear and finally install the drive gear, placing grease in the seal.

After tightening the drive gear flange fastening nut, check the torque of the drive gear bearings, which should be within 21-27 kgf·cm.
