Clutch disc: thickness check (BMW 3 Series E36)

Special tool:
  • Jack and stands.
  • Set of wrench heads.
  • A BMW control template that you can make yourself.

Wear parts:
  • Only if the check reveals wear on the clutch, driven clutch disc.

The clutch is self-adjusting and does not require maintenance. The wear of the driven disk is determined by the free travel of the clutch pedal. The thickness of the driven disk is measured in the installed position using a special control template.

As part of routine maintenance work, the thickness of the driven disk must be checked every 80,000 km.

Unscrew the clutch slave cylinder from the clutch basket, for which unscrew the 2 bolts "arrows". The hydraulic connection is not disconnected.

Insert the control template into the hole of the actuator cylinder as shown in the figure and press in the direction of the arrow. Read the reading from the scale -black arrow-; the clutch disc must be replaced if the red sector of the scale is visible.
