- 10 or 12 mm socket wrench for drain and fill plugs.
Consumables and wear parts:
- BMW specification oil
- 2 sealing aluminum rings, size A22x27.
Make a short trip to allow the oil in the rear axle differential gear to reach operating temperature.
Raise the vehicle horizontally.
Unscrew oil filler plug -1-.
If some oil leaks out, the oil level was correct and the gearbox has no leaks. Otherwise, use your finger to check if the oil reaches the lower edge of the hole.
Attention: If there is a large lack of oil, find and eliminate the cause.
Unscrew the drain plug -2- and drain the oil into a suitable container.
Attention: Old oil is handed over to special waste collection points. Never throw away the old oil and throw it away with household waste.
The drain plug has a magnet that collects metal chips in the gearbox. Clean the cork from metal filings. Then tighten the plug with a tightening torque of 50 Nm.
Pour oil from the oiler.
Oil specification: Hypoid gear oil SAE 90. Use only oils recommended by BMW (written on the packaging).
Filling capacity:
- 316i/318i/318is/318tds/320i models: 1.1L
- 325i/325td/tds/328i: 1.7L
Caution: The oil is viscous, so do not add too much oil at once. Maintain pauses and substitute a vessel to collect the flowing oil.
Screw in the filler plug with a new gasket with a tightening torque of 50 Nm.
