Changing the oil in the rear axle differential gearbox (BMW 3 Series E36)

            0

Special tool:
  • 10mm or 12mm Allen head bolt wrench for drain and fill plugs.

Consumables and wearing parts:
  • Oil according to BMW specification
  • 2 aluminum sealing rings, size A22x27.

Make a short drive to allow the oil in the rear axle differential gearbox to reach operating temperature.

Raise the car horizontally.

Raise the car horizontally.

Unscrew the oil filler plug "1".

If a little oil flows out, the oil level was normal and the gearbox has no leaks. Otherwise, use your finger to check whether the oil reaches the bottom edge of the hole.

Attention: If there is a significant lack of oil, determine and eliminate the cause.

Unscrew drain plug "2" and drain the oil into a container placed underneath.

Attention: Old oil is handed over to special waste collection points. Never pour out old oil or throw it away with household waste.

The drain plug has a magnet that collects metal shavings in the gearbox. Clean the plug from metal filings. Then tighten the plug with a tightening torque of 50 Nm.

Pour in oil from an oiler.

Oil specification: Hypoid gear oil SAE 90. Only use oils recommended by BMW (it's written on the package).

Filling capacity:

  • models 316i/318i/318is/318tds/320i: 1.1 l.
  • 325i/325td/tds/328i: 1.7L

Note: The oil is viscous, so do not pour too much oil at once. Take breaks and place a container underneath to collect the leaking oil.

Tighten the filler plug with a new gasket to a tightening torque of 50 Nm.
