Changing the oil in the rear axle differential gearbox (BMW 5 Series E34)

            0

Special tool:
  • 10mm or 12mm Allen head bolt wrench for drain and fill plugs.

Consumables and wearing parts:
  • Oil according to BMW specification
  • Two sealing rings, size A22x27.

Make a short drive to allow the oil in the rear axle differential gearbox to reach operating temperature.

Raise the car horizontally.

Raise the car horizontally.

Unscrew the oil filler plug 1. If a little oil flows out, the oil level was normal and the gearbox has no leaks. Otherwise, use your finger to check whether the oil reaches the lower edge of the hole.

Attention: If there is a significant lack of oil, determine and eliminate the cause.

Unscrew drain plug 2 and drain the oil into a container underneath.

Attention: Old oil is handed over to special waste collection points. Never pour out old oil or throw it away with household garbage.

The drain plug has a magnet that collects metal shavings in the gearbox. Clean the plug from metal filings. Then tighten the plug with a tightening torque of 55 Nm.

Pour in oil from an oiler.
