Gearbox: Oil change (BMW 3 Series E36)

Special tool:
  • Jack and stands.
  • Set of wrench heads.

Consumables:
  • Gearbox oil according to the specified specification.

Gearbox oil change should be performed within the framework of the maintenance schedule every 80,000 km. Within the framework of the maintenance schedule, it is necessary to perform an external inspection of the gearbox and check the oil level at each service. The oil level should reach the lower edge of the filler hole.

Before changing the oil, the gearbox must be warm, for this purpose take a 15-minute drive.

Raise the car.

Unscrew the oil filler plug "1" on the gearbox.

— Unscrew the oil drain plug "2" at the bottom of the gearbox.

Warning: Drain the oil into a container and then take it to a special waste collection point. Do not pour out the oil or throw it away with household garbage.


— Tighten the drain plug to a tightening torque of 50 Nm.

— The oil to be filled must be approved by BMW. 8 These are mainly oils for automatic transmissions, designated "Dexron II".

Filling capacity: all models except 325td/tds: 1.1 liter; 325td/tds models: 1.1 liter.

Caution: Never fill the oil above the lower edge of the filler hole.




Tighten the filler plug to a tightening torque of 50 Nm.

Lower the car.
