Automatic transmission type "A5S 390R"



The oil level in the automatic transmission type "A5S 390R" must be checked in the following order. Place the car in a horizontal position, the gear selector in the "P" position and tighten the parking brake.

  • Connect the BMW-DIS or MoDiC BMW diagnostic information system to the vehicle. Unscrew the plug (1, Fig. 2.45) from the filler hole.
  • Fill the automatic transmission with oil until it starts to overflow. Screw in the filler plug (1) by hand. Start the engine and let it idle. Press the brake, and in idle mode, in turn, several times set the control selector to each of the possible gear engagement positions.
  • Unscrew the filler plug (1) again. Check the oil temperature in the automatic transmission using the BMW-DIS or MoDiCBMW system; it should be around 30°—50°C. Add oil to the automatic transmission until it starts to overflow.
  • Check the condition of the filler plug (M14) and replace it if necessary. Screw in the filler plug (1) with a new sealing ring and tighten it to a torque of 18 N·m (1.8 kgf·m). Dispose of the drained oil.

If the manual transmission is equipped with a filler plug M30x1.5, it should be tightened to a torque of 80 N·m (8.0 kgf·m).
