Changing the oil in the manual transmission (BMW X5 E53)

The transmission oil in a manual gearbox (MT) must be replaced in the following order. Prepare the workplace, tools and consumables. Take a trip and install the car on a lift, overpass, inspection pit or level area. Place a container to collect the oil drained from the MT.

• Unscrew the plug (1, Fig. 2.44) from the filler hole of the manual transmission and unscrew the plug (2) from the drain hole of the manual transmission.
• Allow the oil to drain completely.
• Completely clean the magnetic drain plug from deposits, replace the sealing ring and install the plug in the manual transmission housing, tightening it to a torque of 5.0 kgf·m (50 N·m). Fill the manual transmission with new high-quality transmission oil to the lower edge of the filler hole.
• Install the manual transmission filler plug with a new sealing ring and tighten it to a torque of 5.0 kgf·m (50 N·m).
• Send the drained oil for disposal.
