The BMW X5 E53 brake fluid replacement must be carried out in the following order. Install the car on a lift, overpass or inspection pit, tighten the parking brake. Loosen the wheel fastenings, lift the car and remove the car wheels.
- Open the hood and provide access to the brake fluid reservoir. Remove the brake fluid from the reservoir with a syringe, leaving a level of about 10 mm.
Caution! Do not drain the reservoir completely to prevent air from entering the brake system.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh brake fluid up to the "MAX" mark. Install a transparent hose on the bleed nipple of the right rear brake mechanism and lower it into the receiving container (vessel, jar) one third filled with brake fluid, make sure that the hose is constantly dipped in fluid.
- Press the brake pedal several times in a row (7-10 times) until strong counterpressure appears, fix the pedal in the pressed position with a block or use a device (see fig. 11.3).
- Unscrew the bleed nipple with a spanner and release the fluid through a transparent hose into a receiving container. Close the nipple when the pedal touches the floor. Release the brake pedal. Restore the brake fluid level in the reservoir.
- Repeat this process several times (10-12), as many as necessary to ensure that fresh fluid flows out of the system through the transparent hose. Fresh brake fluid is lighter in color than the fluid being replaced.
Caution! Bleed the brake mechanism until the escaping fluid does not contain air bubbles. The collected brake fluid should be disposed of.
- Similarly, pump out the brake fluid from the remaining brake mechanisms. Observe the following sequence for removing brake fluid from the brake mechanism calipers:
- rear right;
- rear left;
- front right;
- front left.
- Replace the brake fluid in the clutch control hydraulic system in the same manner. Install the wheels on the vehicle and tighten the mounting bolts by hand. Lower the vehicle onto the wheels and tighten the mounting bolts crosswise to a torque of 140 Nm (14.0 kgf·m).
