BMW X5 E53 brake fluid replacement must be carried out in the following order. Install the car on a lift, overpass or inspection hole, tighten the parking brake. Loosen the wheels, raise the car and remove the wheels of the car.
- Open the hood and provide access to the brake fluid reservoir. Use a syringe to remove the brake fluid from the reservoir, leaving a level of about 10 mm.
Attention! Do not drain the tank completely to prevent air from entering the brake system.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh brake fluid up to the mark «MAX». Install a transparent hose on the bleeder valve of the right rear brake mechanism and lower it into a receiving container (vessel, jar) one third filled with brake fluid, make sure that the hose is constantly filled with fluid.
- Press the brake pedal several times in succession (7-10 times), until a strong back pressure appears, fix the pedal in the depressed position with a bar or use the tool (see fig. 11.3).
- Unscrew the bleed valve with a ring wrench and release the liquid through a transparent hose into a receiving container. Close the fitting when the pedal touches the floor. Release the brake pedal. Restore the brake fluid level in the reservoir.
- Repeat this process several times (10—12), as long as it is necessary for fresh fluid to flow from the system through a transparent hose. Fresh brake fluid is lighter in color than the fluid being replaced.
Attention! Bleed the brake mechanism until the escaping fluid has no air bubbles. The collected brake fluid will lie down for disposal.
- Pump out the brake fluid from the rest of the brakes in the same way. Observe the following sequence for removing brake fluid from the brake calipers:
- rear right;
- rear left;
- front right;
- front left.
- Replace the brake fluid in the hydraulic clutch control system in the same way. Install the wheels on the car and tighten the bolts of their fastening by hand. Lower the car onto the wheels and tighten the mounting bolts crosswise to a torque of 140 N.m (14.0 kgf·m).
