Checking the level and changing the oil in a manual transmission (BMW 3 Series E46)

            0

The manual transmission is filled with oil and does not require replenishment as part of maintenance. When performing maintenance, it is necessary to visually check the manual transmission for leaks. If there is an oil leak, check its level and eliminate the cause.

1. Before changing the oil, the manual transmission must be warmed up to the temperature of the palm of your hand, for which drive the car for 15 minutes.

The operation of lifting and installing the vehicle on stands is associated with danger! Therefore, before carrying out the operation, read the Section Jacking and towing

2. Place the vehicle horizontally on stands and remove the lower engine compartment cover, refer to Section Removal and installation the lower engine compartment cover.

2. Place the vehicle horizontally on stands and remove the lower engine compartment cover, refer to…

3. Unscrew the oil filler plug "1" in the manual transmission. If some oil flows out, the oil level is normal and the gearbox is sealed. Otherwise, check with your finger whether the oil level reaches the lower edge of the hole.

4. Place a container under the box. Unscrew the drain plug "2" and drain the oil.

Oil sales points accept a certain amount of used oil free of charge. Therefore, when buying new oil, keep the receipt and canister for the possibility of handing in the used oil! Protect the environment, under no circumstances pour out used oil or dispose of it together with household waste.

5. Tighten the drain plug to the torque specified in the Specifications.

6. Fill the gearbox with oil. The type and volume of oil are given in the Specifications.

If there is a yellow or green sticker near the oil filler plug, you must fill the box with special BMW oil; if there is an orange sticker, you must fill the box with ATF-Dexron oil approved by BMW

Gearbox oil has a high viscosity, so do not pour too much oil at once. Wait for a while and place a container underneath to collect excess oil

7. Tighten the filler cap to the torque specified in the Specifications.

8. Lower the vehicle onto its wheels. Install the lower engine compartment cover.
