The filling volume is approximately 3.3 liters.
Caution: Only oils approved by BMW for automatic transmissions must be used. The following oils are allowed to be used: Esso ATF Dexron D-21OB5 (filled at the factory), Shell ATF Dexron II D-21-666, Mobil ATF 220 D-20104, Total Dexron II D-20356. For the possibility of using other oils, please consult your BMW dealer.
When changing the oil, be extremely clean. The slightest contamination leads to failure of automation.
Attention: Do not start the engine and tow the vehicle with the gearbox not filled with oil.
Examination
Control of the prescribed oil level is possible only with the help of a tester used in the maintenance of BMW vehicles, by polling the condition of the vehicle components and assemblies. Consequences of too high oil level: strong foaming, hydraulic losses, temperature increase during fast driving, oil loss through the ventilation system.
Consequences of too low oil level: valve crackling, foaming, engine crankshaft turns (slippage), disruption of the entire work.
Change of oil
To warm up the transmission, drive for at least 15 km.
Raise the car in a horizontal position and secure it with jack stands. Remove the lower casing of the engine compartment, see p. 10.
Remove oil drain plug -1- from oil pan and collect escaping oil. If the oil has a burnt smell and a blackish color, the gearbox needs to be repaired.
Warning: Dispose of gear oil at a special waste collection point, do not drink it under any circumstances and do not dispose of it with household waste.
Remove oil filler plug -2- from bottom of oil pan.
Tighten drain plug -1- with new O-ring to 15 Nm.
Pour ATF through the filler hole until oil starts to pour out of the filler hole. Collect excess oil.
Start the engine. The lever for selecting the operating mode must be in position P. Turn on outdoor lighting - while the engine speed increases.
Top up the ATF level until oil starts to pour out of the filler hole again.
Tighten filler plug -2- with new O-ring to 100 Nm.
With the engine running, repeatedly move the operating mode selector lever to all positions.
Have the gearbox oil level checked at a BMW workshop.
