Removal and installation the gear shift lever (BMW 5 Series E39)
Removal

Pull the gear shift lever knob up strongly.

Detach the cover from the center console and remove it from the gear shift lever.

Raise the vehicle. Remove the locking clip "4" from the underside of the vehicle and pull out the gear shift fork rod. Remove the washers "5" from both sides of the rod.
Place a cam key underneath the gear shift lever (for example, BMW-251110) and turn the nut counterclockwise by 90°. Then press the spherical liners upward.

Disconnect the rubber boot from the body and the gear shift console and pull it up together with the shifter. If present, loosen and remove the clamp at the gear shift lever vibration damper.
Installation
Lubricate the spherical bearings of the gear shift lever with grease "Kluber Polylub GLY 801".

Insert the gear shift lever together with the spherical bearings so that the protrusion or arrow on the spherical bearing faces the bearing journal, i.e. in the direction opposite to the vehicle's movement.
Press the bearing shells from above into the holder with a screwdriver so that the holder's protrusions audibly fix them.
Insert the gear shift fork rod with washers into the shift lever. Install the locking bracket. Lower the vehicle.
Secure the rubber boot. Place the inner edge on the gearshift lever arm and the outer edge on the cutout in the body.
Install the vibration damper and secure with a clamp.
Attach the cover to the lid.
Apply force and place the head on the gear shift lever.
