Gear Shift Lever — Removal and Installation (BMW 7 Series E32)
Elements of the gear shift mechanism
1 - gear shift lever (inside the cabin);
2 - gear shift lever;
3 - support;
4 — gear shift rod;
5 - spacer washer;
6 — mounting washer;
7 — gear shift rod hinge;
8 - retaining ring;
9 - rubber washer;
10 - cylindrical pin;
11 - rubber cover;
12 - support finger;
13 — support sleeve;
14 — support;
15 — Reverse light switch;
16 — vibration damper;
17 - glued part.

Removal
Pull the gear shift lever handle up firmly.
Pry the shift lever boot off the center console and pull it off the shift lever.
Raise and support the vehicle. From the underside of the vehicle, remove the mounting bracket (4) and pull out the shift rod, remove the washers (5) from both sides of the shift rod.
Place a special key on the gearshift lever from below and turn it 90° counterclockwise. Then push the spherical cup upwards.
Remove the rubber boot from the body and console and lift it up along with the gearshift lever. If present, unscrew the vibration damper clip (counterweight) on the gear shift lever and remove it.
Installation
Lubricate the spherical cup of the gear shift lever with grease.
Insert the gear shift lever with the spherical cup so that the protrusion or arrow on the spherical cup is directed towards the support journal, i.e. opposite to the direction of travel.

Press the support cup with a screwdriver from above into the mount until the mount's tabs click into place with a click.
Insert the gearshift rod pin with washers into the gearshift lever, press the mount (bracket). Lower the car.
Install the rubber boot. Place the inner edge on the lever and the outer edge in the body cutout.
Slide the vibration damper on and secure with the clamp. Snap the cover with the cover.
Place the lever handle onto the lever and press it firmly.
