Removal and installation the gear shift lever (BMW 3 Series E30)

Removal

Shift console made of sheet steel.

Raise the car.

The cardan shaft with the vibration damper must be removed, otherwise it is impossible to remove the shift rod (see section "Removal and installation the propeller shaft").



Press the stopper "1". Remove the washer "2". Pull out the shift rod "3".



Remove the faux leather cover and pull out the damping felt.

Remove the trim cuff between the body and the shift console.

Use pliers to pull out the gear shift lever retaining ring. Remove the gear shift lever.

On vehicles with an aluminum shift console, there is a lock at the bottom of the shift lever that should be turned 90° counterclockwise. Then press the ball cup upward and pull the shift lever upward.

Installation

Lubricate the ball cups of the gear shift lever with Molykore Longtherm 2.

Insert and secure the shift lever with the retaining ring.

On vehicles with an aluminum shift console: insert the ball cups so that the projections on them fit into the cutouts on the shift console. Insert the lever and press until the clamps click twice.

Insert the trim cuff between the body and the shift console.

Insert damping felt.

Insert the faux leather cover into the console.

Insert the gear shift rod. Place the washer on the pin, insert the gear shift rod stopper into the pin.

If removed, install the cardan shaft.
