External inspection of leaks
The following leak locations are possible:
- Connecting the engine block to the gearbox (flywheel gasket/gearbox).
- Oil filler / oil drain plug.
- Driveshaft flange on gearbox.
When looking for a leak, it is recommended:
- Clean the gearbox housing with a suitable cleaner.
- Check the oil level and add oil if necessary.
- Sprinkle with talcum powder on potential leaks.
- Make a control trip. Since the oil liquefies when the transmission is warm and penetrates through leaks more quickly, drive on the motorway for at least 30 km.
- Raise the car and inspect the gearbox with the carrier lamp.
- Locate leaks and fix them immediately.
Checking the oil level
The gearbox oil is changed only once during the break-in period (mileage 2000 km): work must be done at a service station. As part of the maintenance schedule, it is only necessary to carry out an external inspection of the gearbox, if traces of oil are found, control its level. A 19mm Allen key is required to remove the oil filler plug.
Raise the car.
Loosen the oil filler plug (arrow) on the gearbox. It is located on the right or left side of the box, depending on its type. Place a container under the oil that is flowing out.
Insert your finger into the hole. The oil level should reach the lower edge of the hole.
If necessary, top up with oil for gearboxes of viscosity grade SAE 80, specification MiL-L-2105-A or API GL4. Oil must be approved by BMW (written on the packaging). If this oil is not available, seasonal engine oil SAE 20. 30 or 40 specification AOI-SE or SF can be filled. Filling requires an oiler or hose. When topping up, place a vessel to collect the escaping oil.
Oil filling volume
Attention: Never pour oil above the lower edge of the filler hole.
Screw in the filler plug with a tightening torque of 50 Nm.
Checking the articulated discs on the cardan shaft
Articulated discs are checked as part of the maintenance schedule every 20,000 km.
Raise the car.
Check with a carrier lamp for wear, damage and deformation of the front and rear hinged discs.
Check for cracks in the intermediate tracks in the area of the bushings (arrows).
If necessary, replace the swivel disc. In case of deformation, relieve the hinge plate: if the deformation persists, also replace the hinge plate.
Lower the car.
