Adjusting the cable drive for switching operating modes (BMW 5 Series E39)

            0

The operating mode specified by the lever position (PRND etc.) is transmitted to the automatic transmission by means of a cable drive. Adjustment of the cable drive is necessary after installation of the transmission or gear shifter.

Adjustment

Adjustment

Set the operating mode selection lever "1" to position P - "parking".

Raise the car and remove the lower engine compartment cover.

Loosen the nut "2" of the cable rod at the gearbox lever.

Note: To prevent the cable traction from bending, be sure to hold the tightening bolt when loosening the nut. A cable traction that has bent must be replaced with a new one, as it will break after a while.

Press the gearbox lever "3" by hand until it stops forward, i.e. in the direction of the car's movement. This position corresponds to the "parking" mode.

Press the rod "4" of the cable traction against the direction of movement and in this position tighten the clamping bolt with a torque of 10 Nm, i.e. not very hard. In this case, hold the clamping bolt with a second wrench so that the cable traction does not bend.

Install the lower engine compartment cover and lower the vehicle.

Removing and installing the cable traction at the gearbox

Loosen clamping nut "2".

Loosen nut "5" at the counter support and remove the cable traction.

When installing, insert the cable traction and first lock the nuts on the counter support.

After this, adjust the cable traction, see above.
