Checking the level and topping up oil in the automatic transmission (A5 S 360 R/390 K) (BMW X3 E83)

Attention:
  • Only certified grades of transmission oil must be used for this automatic transmission.
  • Violation of this rule leads to serious damage to the automatic transmission.

1. Set the selector lever to position "P".

Note: The vehicle must be on a level surface and must be kept immobile in case of possible jolts.


2. Connect the BMW Diagnostic Information System (DIS) to the vehicle.

3. Unscrew the plug (1) of the oil filler hole.

4. Pour in automatic transmission fluid until it starts to overflow.

Oil grade: ETL 7045, ETL 8072 B, ETL7045 E.



5. Screw in the oil filler plug (1) by hand.

6. Start the engine and let it idle.

7. Press the brake and, while idling, move the control lever to each of the possible positions several times in turn.

8. Unscrew the oil filler plug (1) again.

9. Increase the oil temperature in the automatic transmission to 30 - 50'C.

10. Measure the oil temperature using the BMW Diagnostic Information System.

11. Pour in automatic transmission fluid until it starts to overflow.

Tightening torque: 18 Nm.

Note: When installing, check the sealing ring of the oil filler plug (1) for damage and, if necessary, replace the sealing ring and plug (1).
