Changing and topping up oil in the transfer case (ATS 400/500 XDRIVE) (BMW X3 E83)

Attention:
  • Only certified grades of oil should be used for the transfer case.
  • Failure to comply with this rule will result in serious damage to the transfer case.


Note: The oil change is performed with the transfer case warmed up to operating temperature.


1. Check and top up the oil level in the transfer case.


1. Check and top up the oil level in the transfer case.

1) Unscrew the plug (1) of the oil filler hole.

2) Check the oil level in the transfer case.

3) If necessary, add oil up to the lower edge of the oil filler hole (1).

Note: When installing, it is necessary to replace the sealing ring.


Tightening torque: 33 Nm.

2. Change the oil in the transfer case.

1) Place a device to collect the liquid.

2) Unscrew the plug (2) of the oil drain hole.

3) Drain the oil from the transfer case and send it for disposal.

©Note:

Observe the applicable national disposal regulations.

4) Replace the sealing ring, screw in the oil drain plug (2) and tighten.

Tightening torque: 33 Nm.

5) Unscrew the plug (1) of the oil filler hole.

6) If necessary, add oil up to the lower edge of the oil filler hole (1).

Tightening torque: 33 Nm.

7) Replace the sealing ring.
