Examination
The oil level can only be monitored by status inquiry with the BMW Service Tester.
Consequences of increased oil level: large foaming, increased temperature at high speed, oil leakage through the box ventilation system.
Consequences of a low oil level: valve chatter, foaming, general malfunctions.
Change of oil
Special tool:
- Hydraulic jack stands.
- Models 320i/325i/328i: Torx wrench kit.
Wear parts and consumables:
- 1 aluminum spacer A30x36; 1 aluminum spacer A10x14
- ATF oil approved by BMW.
Caution: Use only oils recommended by the manufacturer. In general, all automatic transmission oils with the designation "Dexron II". All permitted oils are allowed to be mixed. Do not use any additives.
Normally, the ATF oil is changed every 40,000 km, at the same time the screen in the oil sump is cleaned. When changing the oil, observe the strictest cleanliness. Even the smallest contamination can cause automatic transmission failure.
Attention: When the oil in the transmission box is drained, it is forbidden to start the engine. Also, when the oil in the transmission box is drained, it is forbidden to tow the car.
Oil change is carried out on a heated box.
Raise the vehicle and place it horizontally on stands.
Models 316i/318i/318is/325td/tds
Unscrew the oil filler pipe at the bottom of the oil sump and drain the oil into a vessel underneath.
Attention: Take gearbox oil to special waste collection points. Do not pour or dispose of with household waste.
If the oil has a burnt smell or a blackish color, the box should be repaired.
Unscrew the oil filler plug on the side of the oil sump.
Close without overtightening the drain plug. The tightening torque is 25 Nm.
Pour through the side ATF filler hole until the oil exits through the filler hole. Drain the spilled oil into a container.
Wrap, without overtightening, the filler plug with a new gasket. The tightening torque is 30 Nm.
Models 320i/325i/328i
Unscrew the oil filler pipe at the bottom of the oil sump and drain the oil into a vessel underneath.
Attention: Take gearbox oil to special waste collection points. Do not pour or dispose of with household waste.
If the oil has a burnt smell or a blackish color, the box should be repaired.
Loosen the oil filler plug on the bottom of the oil sump.
Carefully tighten drain plug -1- with a new gasket. The tightening torque is 15 Nm.
Pour through the ATF filler hole until oil exits through the filler hole. Drain the spilled oil into a vessel.
Screw in the filler plug -2- with a new gasket without overtightening. The tightening torque is 100 Nm.
Check oil level.
