Mark the position of the wheel on the hub with paint. Thanks to this, the balanced wheel can be installed again in its original position. Loosen wheel bolts.
Raise the car, remove the wheels.
Disc brakes
The thickness of the lining - without taking into account the thickness of its reverse side edged with metal - is determined visually from above through the brake caliper.
The thickness of the outer lining is controlled from the side. If the lining thickness approaches the wear limit, the linings should be removed and their thickness measured with a caliper.
The front and rear axle disc brake linings have reached the wear limit if even just one of them is 2 mm thick.
Note: Approximate wear of 1 mm of lining thickness corresponds to a vehicle mileage of at least 1000 km. This estimate is valid under unfavorable conditions. Brake linings usually last much longer. Thus, with a disc brake lining thickness of 5.0 mm (without taking into account the thickness of the bearing back side) the remaining service life of the brake pads will correspond to a vehicle mileage of at least 3,000 km.
Check brake calipers for brake fluid loss. If a leak is found, the brake caliper must be repaired immediately.
Visually inspect the brake discs inside and out for ribs, rust or cracks. If defects are found, brake discs must be replaced.
Parking (manual) brake
With the rear brake disc removed, the brake pads can be inspected. The brake pad has reached the wear limit if the lining at its thinnest point is 1.5 mm thick.
If the wear limit is reached, replace the brake pads. Be sure to replace all brake linings on this axle, see section "Brake system".
Attach the wheels so that the marks applied before removal coincide. Do not grease wheel bolts. Bolt the wheels. Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts crosswise to 100 Nm.
