Checking the condition and replacing the windshield wipers (BMW 5 Series E28)

Table of contents: Examination ↓ Replacing windshield wipers ↓
Annually or every 20,000 km.

Over time, road film builds up on windshield wipers, reducing their effectiveness, so wipers should be washed regularly in a mild cleaning solution.

Examination

Wiper blade assemblies should be inspected regularly. If inspection reveals hardened or cracked rubber on the blades, replace the blades. If inspection reveals nothing unusual, wet the windshield, turn on the wipers, let them run for a while, and turn them off. Uneven marks from the blades on the glass or streaks on clean glass indicate that the blades should be replaced.

During operation of the windscreen wiper mechanism, the mounting nuts may become loose, so they should be checked and, if necessary, tightened each time the wipers are checked (see chapter Steering for more detailed information on the operation of the windshield wiper mechanism).

Replacing windshield wipers

1. Pull the wiper assembly with the blade off the glass.

2. Press the retaining tab inward and remove the blade assembly from the wiper arm.

3. If you want to replace only the wiper blade rubber, detach the end of the wiper blade from the wiper blade frame, then pull the wiper blade out of the frame.

4. Compare the new brush with the old one in length, design, etc.

5. Place the new brush in place, then insert the end of the brush into the brush frame to secure it.

6. Install the wiper assembly onto the arm, then wet the glass and test the wiper operation.
