Replacing the air filter (BMW 3 Series E36)

No special tool is required. The following wearing parts must be purchased:

• Filter element. When purchasing, keep in mind that there are different filter elements for different types of engines.

Removal

Models 316i/318i/318is: Open the 4 "arrow" clamps. Lift the top of the filter housing and remove the filter element.



320i/325i/328i models: Press the left and right filter element flap retaining tabs and remove the flap. Remove the filter element.

Wipe the filter housing with a cloth.

If there is slight contamination, carefully knock out the filter element with the dirty side down. An oily filter must be replaced.

Caution: Do not clean the filter element with gasoline or coat it with oil. Do not blow the filter with compressed air.

Installation

• Insert the filter element into the air filter housing.
• Models 316i/318i/318is: Place the cover on top. Close the clamp latches.
• 320i/325i/328i models: Insert the flap and snap both clamp latches into place.
