Rear axle. General information and design (BMW 3 Series E36)

BMW cars have a rear axle with central wishbones of independent wheel suspension. In this case, the position of each wheel is determined by three levers: the upper and lower transverse levers, as well as a longitudinal lever fixed to the bottom of the car. Coil springs and shock absorbers serve for suspension. Transverse lever (installed on all models except 3161) serves to improve driving performance, especially when cornering.

Note: The 3-series "Compact" models have a different rear axle. Each wheel is controlled by a diagonal lever. The following work steps apply to both axle types.

In the middle of the rear axle is the rear axle gearbox. All parts, including the rear axle gearbox, have elastic fastening in rubber bushings that do not require maintenance, thereby reducing the impact of road irregularities and drive vibration on passengers.

The cardan shaft transmits torque from the gearbox through the rear axle gearbox and half shafts to the rear wheels.
